There’s a certain futurism to the structural loops and folds which come together to make up Haider Ackermann’s Fall 2010 collection. And while the elements are in themselves phenomenally crafted and artistically executed, the whole is yet greater than the sum of the parts. Each look, overall, works.

Skirts with revealing centre dress slits are a beautiful accompaniment to architectural jackets with detachable peplums and rolling collars. Leather dresses and boots with laser cut-out detailing are similarly striking.

Sophia Kokosalaki always manages to bring a combination of romance and sexual awareness to her collections. There’s a strength; and an effortlessness that’s so ultimately Australian in feel. Trouser and jacket cuts are relaxed and flowing, shorter cut dresses sparkle with understated metallics.

The half-shaved hair thing is certainly not a style I would try myself - especially since emulating the effect via slicked hair is a simpler, more temporary option. But to hell with simplicity, this is fashion and the fact that people will go to any lengths for it means that this look is still being spotted on the streets long after rose to prominence in 2008.

Deibe Rondon’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection takes sophisticated forms - and adds feminine details like ruffles and bows to create fun, sometimes whimsical, looks. Silk, satin and luxe knits form the basis of the range; while the playful full-skirted dresses are perhaps the most stand-out of the lot.

I must confess, I am a failure at the maxi dress. Every time I acquire anything of full length, it hangs in my wardrobe for six months, unworn, before eventually being brought out and hacked up above the knee - or given away, or sold. The maxi dress is, quite simply, not for everyone. But despite all that, I can never cease to admire Pucci’s long flowing pieces.

Fall 2010’s maxis are impressive. Some fitted with swirling bohemian prints; some of wafting sheer layers, complete with thigh high splits.

If there’s one thing weirder than seeing Natasha Poly as Courtney Love, it’s seeing porcelain skinned English rose Lily Donaldson in a shoot inspired by Salt-n-Pepa.

Not that I’m understating the significance of the rap group, who came out with such gems as “Let’s Talk About Sex”, “Whatta Man”, and “Shoop” (and yes, I’ll confess I still have some S’n'P tucked away in my music collection. You know you do too.) But it leaves me wondering: what do all theses 90s references mean to the younger end of today’s fashion crowd?
