For Autumn / Fall 2010, Juien Macdonald sent some of the most intricate, most delicate sheers down the runway that we’ve seen in a long time. Strongly lingerie inspired - at times even with exposed underwires - their lace sleeves won’t do much to keep you warm in Winter; but then again, who really cares?

To the sound of a close-to-deafening clap of thunder and to a deluge of artificial rain Australian model Miranda Kerr strode onto a temporary catwalk in the Docklands and heralded in David Jones‘ Autumn / Winter 2010 collections.

It’s no secret that David Jones know how to put on a show. Even with recession-induced cut backs, we were again greeted with a star-studded audience, a delicious brunch, and a soundtrack that could easily go straight from the runway to your iPod.

Some of Australia’s biggest and brightest fashion names were represented on the runway; and with saleability clearly in mind, the outfits centered largely around 2010’s fashion trends.

Futurism. It’s something of a paradox. The future cannot be predicted; but in envisioning it, we can create self-fulfilling prophecies. You could go crazy just thinking about it - so instead let’s just say that the dawn of a new decade has sent 2010’s fashion trends into sci-fi and futurism overdrive.

So how do we define futuristic fashion? As a Spring 2010 fashion trend it seems to be less about gadgetry and more about future environments. We’re faced with collections that contemplate dystopia or evolutionary change. Topics of science fiction are woven into the threads of some designers’ clothing, while others base their designs on more traditional views of futurism.

I can’t understand a word of what Frenchman James Bort writes… but I’m not sure I really need to. A picture speaks a thousand words, after all, and Bort’s images usually do just that. I’d already written about Gaultier’s bloodied and bruised male models for Fall 2010; now here they are from a different perspective, backstage, as photographed by Bort.

You don’t need a pilot’s license to justify adding any of these to your wardrobe, for their mere presence conveys a spectacular sense of adventure. Despite the amount of patterned pants that hit the runway for Spring 2010, the takeup has been predictably quite slow given how hit-or-miss this look can be. In the latest campaign for Isabel Marant, the gorgeous Daria Werbowy shows how it’s done; with a slouchy fit, cool pair of boots, and a carefree attitude.

Quintessentially British with a modern twist, creative director Kim Jones brings Dunhill squarely into the now with a stand-out Autumn / Fall 2010 men’s collection.

Subtle military references, like lace-up boots and Sam Browne-style utility belts, are perfectly in line with the new and understated take on men’s military fashion we’ve spotted as a trend in 2010. The belts went down the runway complete with elegant leather hip flasks and cigar tubes, though admittedly this is Dunhill’s way of showcasing their bread-and-butter accessories business, and probably isn’t quite so practical in the real world.

Club ties and club crest blazers were also understated; a British take on preppy fashion that left Spring’s contrast piping and bright colours at the door.
