I can’t quite distinguish between one issue of Purple Magazine and the next. Some of the shoots just feel much for muchness, Terry Richardson gets a few models topless (in this case it’s Eniko Mihalik, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lydia Hearst, Irina Lazareanu and Contance Jablonski) and shoots them against a plain white backdrop. Of course these shoots are not the only thing in the magazine, and while we didn’t think Lindsay Lohan’s shoot for this same issue was anything revolutionary, Freja naked was of more interest.

It’s not that this shoot pushes the envelope, nor does its setting or styling set your imagination into overdrive. After the near ubiquity of nudity in fashion in 2009 (and again in 2010) the question had to be asked: where next? Fashion, after all, must move forwards. Fashion must push the envelope. Hence, I asked if threesomes are the new black as, with such sexual indulgences no longer being quite taboo, it seemed logical that fashion pictorials would push in that direction. There was Calvin Klein’s orgy, Lindsay Lohan’s raw expose, and even Kate Moss dabbled. Now you can add Carolyn Murphy to the burgeoning list.

Two things came to mind when I saw the first preview of Lindsay Lohan’s cover for the forthcoming issue of Purple Fashion.

1. The Jesus Christ pose is sure to get people talking.
2. Why put Lindsay Lohan on your cover when she’s seemingly not in favour anymore?

Strangely this behind the scenes video doesn’t even answer the question:

I have questions about this shoot. No, I’m not questioning that Claudia Schiffer still has it - she does. I’m not questioning Jonas Bresnan’s photography - it’s striking, especially the black and white portrait shots. No, I’m simply wondering why Claudia was styled akin to Madonna circa 1985.

So while this shoot uses one of the 2010 hair trends that’s growing increasingly popular - the side-slicked hairstyle - the overly-80s fluffed up waves take a hell of a lot of attitude to pull off for the average person.
